Essex Street Academy
Essex Street Academy is located on the Lower East Side Manhattan in New York City. The Academy has approximately 350 students and shares a building with four other high schools, including New Design High School.
The teaching is project based – inspired by the Danish university Roskilde University, RUC, where one the school leaders has studied. There are 20 in each class on average and the school offers a great deal of support and guidance outside school hours. This approach gives the students of Essex Street Academy exam results that are significantly above the expected average. The majority of the students are from non-academic homes. Many are Afro-Americans or Latinos .
Gefion cooperates with Essex Street Academy in the subjects of English and Social Studies as well as in Spanish with the special Spanish classes for students with Latino background.
